Origins of organics and volatiles in meteorites: insights from TEM in-situ heating experiments

Chondrites can contain up to 6 wt% of carbon, much of which occurs in the insoluble organic matter (IOM). As one of the possible major sources of volatiles for terrestrial planets, it is important to elucidate the origins and thermal histories of volatile components (e.g., organics, water) in chondrites. [The speaker] will present new coordinated transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results from in-situ heating experiments of the fine-grained matrix materials of the Tagish Lake and Murchison meteorites in the new Hitachi SU9000 STEM/SEM.
