An Abnormally Stable Ca-Sulfate Phase on Mars

A lunch-time talk with Erbin Shi

Erbin Shi will discuss the different stabilities of the ordinary gamma phase of anhydrous calcium sulfate under ambient conditions and under hyper-arid regions on Earth and Mars. The talk will consider the following leading questions:

a. What is the cause of this unusual stability, structural or chemical?
b. Is there a relationship between these unknown structural/chemical factors and the hyper-arid environment?
