Gas Pipeline Reform: Spire STL Case Study

Natalie Karas, Environmental Defense Fund

The U.S. is at a critical energy policy juncture that will largely determine the nature of the energy system for decades to come. The International Energy Agency has found that pipelines will play a key role in the transmission and distribution of energy in a net zero emission scenario but continued, unchecked investment in natural gas infrastructure is inconsistent with the imperative to decarbonize by mid-century. This presentation will discuss reforms to the federal pipeline permitting process, focusing on the Spire STL Pipeline--an interstate natural gas pipeline serving St. Louis--as a case study.
